Slow__sleepy

An ambient drift-and-dream mix by Dave Michuda

Yah! A new mix finally! I've been ridiculously busy lately (10 days at the Super Bowl) so haven't been able to do much mixing. Hopefully that will change. This is another mix where the title says it all… slow & sleepy. Pretty straight forward ambient with long, stretched out chords, slow motion sounds to suspend consciousness.

Many of the tracks used here are new or fairly new. A lot of good music has been released in the last few months. I'll have to dive in & come up with some new mixes. I'm sort of planning a neo-classical mix, electronic beats, classic jazz, mellow prog rock, etc. For now I hope you enjoy Slow & Sleepy. — Dave Michuda, Low Light Mixes »

Loscil “Windless”

From the netlabel release Stases

Revealing the somber underpinnings of his Loscil recordings, Scott Morgan has given us Stases - a collection of drones based upon the backgrounds of his work for Kranky Records, from 2001 to now.

As with his previous output, Stases follows theme and concept with further reference and meaning given through the title’s definition: “…a condition of balance among various forces; motionlessness”. Textured, aqueous, warm and pleasingly rich in (often bright) tonality giving us a deeper focus and alternate view into the corners of Morgan’s music. Seemingly so surrounding, submersive, and natural - that it becomes easy to forget the complex overtones and flowing mixtures involved in the creation of them.

Losing billions is stressful, and the brave financiers who risk other people’s money need a way to cool out—hopping on the GV, say, for a bimbo-boffing weekend in the Bahamas. Thanks to the bailout, that’s history. The author imagines one fictional highflier’s shock as he rejoins the commercial-aviation herd.

VanityFair/ Tom Wolfe

“Up until the tarantulas arrived late last year waving their billions in “bailout” money before our faces, there were ten of us, including the two Harvard algorithm swamis, who could use the Gulfstream V, the Falcon, and the three Learjets pretty much anytime we needed them.

The vast majority of the flights—let’s get this straight before anyone starts clucking and fuming—were strictly business, but we also used the planes to “maintain an even strain,” as our C.E.O., Robert J. (Corky) McCorkle, liked to put it.

At the risk of sounding condescending, we should point out that ordinary people haven’t the faintest conception of the strain we had to endure daily. How many ordinary people have ever done anything remotely like betting $7.4 billion—bango!—just so!—that the price of energy will rise sharply 14 months from a certain date? How many of them ever had the animal spirits to go for it on the say-so of a young never-been-wrong-yet meteorology swami from…”

Telegraph

“It has been a long and rocky road for Quentin Tarantino from Reservoir Dogs (1992) to Inglourious Basterds, his new film about a Nazi-scalping Jewish vendetta squad in occupied France. The 46-year-old director has faced more than his fair share of lionisation – a screenplay Oscar, the top prize at Cannes – and scalding backlash from both the critics and fans who once put him on a pedestal. What no one disputes is that a Tarantino film is still a major event, a chance for all the world to decide if he’s still got it, or has managed to get it back, or even to question whether he ever really had it in the first place.eHis most hostile critics suggest that this former video-store clerk from Knoxville, Tennessee, rose too high, too fast – he was still just 28 when Reservoir Dogs received its premiere at Sundance festival – and now, must inevitably fall, Icarus-like, back to earth. It has become conventional to see the heady moment of his 1994 Palme d’Or win for…”

That blabb’d them with such pleasing eloquence,
Is torn from forth that pretty hollow cage,
Where, like a sweet melodious bird, it sung
Sweet varied notes, enchanting every ear!

Gastón Arévalo “Relief”

Written and produced by Gastón Arévalo

Austral is the second Thinner release by Uruguayian artist Gastón Arévalo, packed with smoothly gliding tracks which oscillate above the ground. Following on his Thinner debut Ultramar, which resulted in several gigs in Europe, his new EP further refines the cloudy minimalism Arévalo aims for. This time he matures his sound and enters dense harmonic spaces with withdrawingly, yet reluctant smooth tracks, which are highly euphoric and magic in their own sense. Shining through is deep minimalism, affection to melodies and earthy beats, all sounding like light.

The release opens with the self-titled track, which is enclosed by a harmonic pad, framing in the sunspots in a body of minimal grooves. With the second and third tracks Dubois and Insular, Arévalo takes the listener into a sonic rainforest, where bustling humid micronisms crack on the grounds. The accumulated dense sequences add a streamlined imagery to the sounds, with plenty of rest which glow from the inside out, and work on the dance floor more than ever, provided it exists in your dreams.

The final track relief is more untangled and gives room for sublime pads, which slowly search for the perfect grooves within conclusive structuring sound experiments. Arévalo somehow manages to catch his vision of organic minimalism, which doesn′t orient towards the old masters, but nevertheless reaches similar depth. music which lasts for the change of the coming summers. —text written by Sebastian Redenz

Chloe Aftel was born and raised in Berkeley, CA. She went to the University of Southern California for an MFA in Film Production in 2002 with the hope of creating new worlds filled with beauty and emotion through the medium of moving pictures. Her education showed her that the insight and control she sought was not possible in large-scale movie-making. During her free time she decided to experiment with staging still photos that told the types of dramatic stories she envisioned. In the process, she taught herself to shoot, light, compose, and print her own images. Her photography initially consisted of one-frame movie stills, but it evolved into less production design-heavy, but still highly evocative, scenes with a strong narrative. She prefers to shoot with Polaroid film. With each shot and each subject, she strives to capture an effortless sensuality and intimacy, focusing on the precise moment the image took place.

The Yellowbird Camera that records in 360 makes a photo 360 view look pretty one dimensional. Watch the demo video, you can press play and move the cursor in the direction that you want to see.

“A variant of the yellowBird camera is being utilized within the Google Streetview technology. The prominent difference is that the yellowBird camera records video instead of photographs. The camera uses six cleverly divided lenses in order to capture every possible viewing direction.

The data stream generated by the camera is impressive. Through a double glass-fiber connection, a stream of 1200 Mbit per second is captured and saved in an uncompressed format. Next to the camera, a surround sound microphone system enables to record audio at 96 khz as well.

Bas van Huizen “Vergnoegd”

From the netlabel release Wegwerpwee

Bas van Huizen is a sound and visual artist (video/animation) from Nijmegen the Netherlands. You may know him from his Ontgalman-release on test tube or from his physical releases on Etherkreet records. A label focusing on electroacoustic and improvised music, which he runs together with Ezra Jacobs.

Wegwerpwee contains 8 tracks. According to Bas most of the material is older than Ontgalman, but he mixed and remastered everything for this release. And it is a wonderful piece of electroacoustic-experimental-ambient-music. Wegwerpwee has a rough, down-to-earth, handmade touch. Very drony, with background-noises, hisses, crackles, melody layers, all mixed and set together very carefully and subtly.

To maximise your pleasure: Make sure to listen with headphones.
